About this book Dear Teachers, Colleagues and Professional Development Facilitators I have worked with many wonderful, highly motivated teachers and professional development facilitators over the last ten years, and I really value the specific subject expertise and experience that you bring to professional learning dialogue. You never cease to inspire me, and I've written this book with many of you in mind. I've considered a broad range of readers - some may be novices to teaching; others may be experienced but new to the gifted education field; some will be experts in the field; others will have have gained some expertise and are tasked with training others in their schools. I wanted to write a handbook that would serve all of you. For this reason, I've kept the academic quotes and citations to a minimum, so that the text is uninterrupted and clear. I've also developed most pages in a graphic, stand-alone mode , so that whether you are on your own, or working in a group, the information can be quickly absorbed, and there is time for reflection and consideration. I wanted to make it easy for teachers to ask: "What are we doing right?" "What's missing?" and "What can we do better?" Each section includes teacher reflection activities and checklists, so that reflective practice can be planned, trialled and evaluated. Those of you tasked with leading professional development can take these straight from the handbook and use them in your professional learning group. I'm sharing with you the types of resources that I have created for my professional development facilitation because I developed them in response to the questions and common needs you expressed. This is a "dip - into" book. While it follows a logical sequence, I wanted it to be 'needs based' so I've made it easy to dip into a specific chapter and explore a topic, so it can meet your immediate needs. It's not a book to read through and put aside. Hopefully, as a handbook it will be one you can refer back to time and time again. The contents include * Developing your vision by creating a Gifted Graduate Profile and the characteristics of gifted learners * Curriculum delivery and classroom practice: gifted learners' voices and the most effective options for gifted learners from the research; essential elements in unit overviews and unit content * The DPI Model for gifted learners: Differentiating, personalising and individualising learning, with practical examples and ways of implementing them, and other gifted education models which differentiate learning * A rich range of classroom tools and strategies for teachers with practical examples for teachers to trial, including an adapted Blooms taxonomy model, Tony Ryan's Thinker's Keys, Eberle's SCAMPER, Socratic Questioning, Lipman's Caring Thinking, and Williams Taxonomy. * Classroom management techniques and a wealth of ideas of how to use the tools and strategies provided in assessment, teaching practice and raising student thinking to a sophisticated level... and much, much more.
